At many employers, their biggest accident prevention challenge is how to deal with ”accident repeaters”. The problem will not go away by itself. An intervention strategy must be developed to stop the pattern before serious injuries occur!

In most cases, the cause of the employees’ problem is temporary. I have seen medical, family, financial, drugs, alcohol, mental, marital, and legal problems as the factor that led to the employees’ increased risk of injury. If the source of the problem can be identified and addressed, the pattern will be broken and the employee will no longer have accidents.

Below is a link to a three step Accident Repeater Intervention Program that has proven effective in rehabilitating ”frequent flyers” at manufacturers, retailers, and health care. I’ve seen it work at both union and non-union operations.

This program works because it shows the employee that management - finds their accident record unacceptable, is concerned about their personal safety, and will work hand-in-hand with them to identify and address the underlying problem.
