Suppose you are shopping for a car and the salesperson tells you there is a 70-90% chance it won't work well. Would you buy it? I doubt it.
Yet, that is the value proposition training offers organizations every day. Should we be surprised that many just don't get very excited about investing in more training?
Training is not a right, its a privilege. Business people understand that organizations make choices every day where to spend their money. The investments that get the resources are those that add real value to the organization.
If we can't put a better value proposition on the table, then we shouldn't be surprised that our investors (management) don't buy it. I think if you thought real hard about it, neither would you if you were on the other side of the table.
Trainers tend to treat training as some kind of sacred right in the organization. But at the end of the day, its just another investment management has to decide whether to make. Accept this harsh reality and deliver real results and you might be surprised how many buyers line up at your door.
