New Companies to Canada: A Crash Course in Canadian Employment
Date:
June 1, 2010 at 1:00 - 2:00 PM ET

Description
Canada is the next frontier for many U.S. and international companies looking to expand their businesses. This will often raise the issue of how to employ Canadian workers. What is required to employ workers in Canada? How do employment laws differ from those in the U.S.? Is there “at-will” employment in Canada? Are there any options for outsourcing employment in Canada until your organization is ready to take on the role of employer?

Employment in Canada is not the same as in the US or in Europe. If only it were as simple as setting up a Canadian bank account and cutting employees checks. The payroll and monetary aspect of doing business in Canada is only one piece of the employment pie. Your firm needs to know Canadian employment laws and which government agencies to register with as a Canadian employer.

This webcast is designed to give you an overview of employment and payroll basics for Canada. Some of what you will learn includes:
  • Overview of Canadian Payroll - remittance of taxes and insurances, year end reporting obligation, and vendor options
  • Hours of work, overtime, and vacation pay regulations
  • Canadian Public Healthcare and Supplemental Benefits - what is mandated and how to maximize your benefit plan
  • Employee handbook tips
  • Leaves of Absence - statutory requirements and policy implications
  • Terminations and layoffs in a country with out “at-will” employment
  • Alternate employment options to hiring directly
Please join HR Options Consultants, Kathryn Benson, Sr. HR Consultant, and Leah Jaikaran, Jr. HR Consultant, as they walk us through a crash course in Canadian employment. Their goal in this webinar is to teach those considering employing workers in Canada the essential basics for employment and payroll as well as review what employment alternatives are available in Canada: ICs, leasing companies, and third party employment.

This webcast has been approved for 1.0 General credits through HRCI
